Don’t Allow It to Destroy Their Lives

Okay, hopefully I got your attention, but don’t think for a minute that the headline over-dramatizes things.  It’s hard to overstate the importance of a will in your children’s future.

Sometimes it’s the little, seemingly insignificant things in life that after we’re gone have a way of becoming major, life-altering problems.

Wills and the fate of your children is one of those, but the good news is that a potential catastrophe can be easily prevented.  With a little planning.

The fact is simply this:  If you die without a will, your kids could end up living with your evil stepmother – or worse.

And if you assume that if you, and your spouse if you’re married, both die and your kids will end up living with the guardian you would have chosen for them, you’re playing a dangerous game and could very well lose.

Here’s reality.

Without a will appointing a guardian, a Judge decides who should step in and raise your children.  If you’re like me, that’s the last thing you want.

A Judge that doesn’t know your children, doesn’t know your family, and doesn’t know your friends.

If it sounds like bad movie plot, it gets worse.

The judge’s task is to appoint a guardian who will be in the best interest of the child.  If the child is old enough, the Court may take their preference and interests into consideration.  May. And even if so, ask yourself:  Is Party Guy Uncle Steve the best choice for them?

The court may take the advice of trusted family members – but there’s risk there, too.

If there is a custody fight, you don’t want it coming down to who has the most money and the best lawyers.

That may be your evil stepmother.  It happens.

Do yourself a favor.  Get your will done yesterday.
